But it is not only the island desolation that is alarming many people at the moment. What causes much more concern of forward-looking part of humanity is that the island snakes are facing a great risk of extinction. There are a few reasons of their disappearance, but here we draw your attention to the following one.
What happened to the snakes was the result of human intervention: scientists and poachers, to be exact. Both did their “best”: scientists – by over-harvesting the serpents, poachers – by doing the same for their own reasons. This intervention caused the phenomenon that the Bothrops insularis give now birth to hermaphrodites. The trouble of such androgynous generation is that it is unable to sexual reproduction any more (as it is different from the true hermaphrodism). End of story.
